Stamp 4-EUFAM vs Stamp 4

A client of mine recently obtained permanent residence through his relationship with an EU national. That relationship has broken up, but it did so after the minimum five year period so his entitlement to permanent residence was not affected. Both INIS and GNIB were aware of the split at the time his residence card issued. His IRP says Stamp 4-EUFAM.

On re-entering the State recently he was told by the BMU that his residence card should be an ordinary Stamp 4 because the relationship has ended - even though it's EU permanent residence. The BMU essentially warned him he may not be allowed back in the next time.

I cannot find any guidance about this online and am wondering if anyone knows the definitive position on it.

Thanks Ángel - I don't know that there was so much an issue of possible revocation, as simply what stamp was reflected on his card. I think the suggestion was that if he wanted to use a Stamp 4-EUFAM card he had to be accompanied by his ex when re-entering the State, and if that wasn't possible he should just be issued a Stamp 4 card instead. Not sure if that makes any difference.
